Business Impact Analysis

Understanding Business Criticality

The Business Impact Analysis (BIA) is the foundation on which the Business Continuity Management programme is built.  It identifies, quantifies and qualifies the impacts in time of a loss, interruption or disruption of business activities on an organisation and provides the data from which appropriate continuity strategies can be determined. The BIA identifies the urgency of each business activity undertaken by the organisation by assessing the impact over time of an interruption to this activity on the delivery of products and services.

What does a Business Impact Analysis Achieve?

  • Helps define resilience requirements by determining critical business products, services, processes activities and resources based on impact during a disruption
  • Provides a solid business case for investments in business continuity and resilience
  • Delivers inputs to allow the assessment of current risks and enable a mitigation strategy

Design

Creating ‘Fit for Purpose’ Strategies

Resilient IT’s design phase identifies and selects appropriate strategies and tactics to determine how continuity and recovery from disruption will be achieved.

The design phase allows us to determine strategies to:

  • To protect prioritised activities
  • To response, recover, resume, continue and stabilise prioritised activities and its supporting resources
  • To mitigate, respond and manage impacts

This includes selection of tactics to be deployed to to protect an organisation in the event of loss of:

  • People (skills and knowledge)
  • Premises (buildings and facilities)
  • Technology (IT and manufacturing equipment)
  • Information (system and paper based)
  • Suppliers (products and services supplied by third parties)
  • Stakeholders (staff, shareholders and external stakeholders)

Plan Development

Planning and Implementation

Resilient IT creates concise and clear business continuity plans that steer and guide organisation’s response and recovery efforts.

Following the onset of a disruptive event, business continuity plans are what guides the organisation through all phases of response and recovery – from initial response, to incident/crisis management and communications, to business process and information technology recovery.

Business continuity plans developed by Resilient iT’s team are threat independent, checklist-oriented, maintainable, and cover:

  • Incident and Crisis Management – providing a structured  response to a disruptive event including escalation triggers to ensure recovery of essential products and services.
  • Communication – Communications Plans summarise key audiences (internal and external) and mediums of communication and any scripted prepared messaging.
  • IT Disaster Recovery – Covering core IT infrastructure and providing a structured recovery to pre-determined recovery point objectives.
  • People and Premise – Plans aligned to people and premise based disruption
  • Other – additional plans aligned to business requirements such as product recall, service continuity, pandemic etc.

Wherever possible we ensure that all BC Plans are embedded as a normal part of BAU and provide real value to an organisation.

Test and Exercise

Put the Plan into Action

Resilient iT Business Continuity Test and ExerciseBusiness continuity and IT disaster recovery plans should not be considered viable unless exercised, and, excluding a real world event, tests are the best form of training for response and recovery personnel.  Exercising validates business continuity and IT disaster recovery plan content and ensure that identified strategies are capable of providing response and recovery results within the time frames approved by management. Exercising also provides critical training to the staff responsible for the response and recovery activities, exercising can also highlight any areas for improvement.

Resilient IT can assist by determining:

With a clear understanding of your organisation and exercise objectives, Resilient IT will develop and facilitate an exercise with relevant scenarios to test all elements of the business continuity process.  This may include emergency response, incident and crisis management and IT disaster recovery.
